I have been searching for a scratch made Sour Cream Pound Cake recipe for a special occasion. I really enjoy making things from scratch just like my grandmother did. I can’t ever remember seeing her measure anything for a recipe. It was always a little of this and a pinch of that, well that is an entirely different post in itself. While I was strolling through Pinterest I came across a recipe that just fit and I am not really sure why, but it just spoke to me. It was one that had minimal ingredients and simple straight forward instructions to follow.
There it was a family recipe from Mary Carver @ Giving Up On Perfect and it was her “Granny’s Famous Sour Cream Pound Cake” recipe, that took family members a very long time to master including Mary. Well I must say, this is one of the most moist and was the most delicious pound cakes that I have ever tried.
This was my first attempt at making a pound cake from scratch and it was flawless with the exception of one thing. I failed to read ahead on the cooling instructions and tried to release the cake from the bundt pan before it had completely cooled. Well the end result as you can see was some of the outer crust stayed in the bundt pan and wasn’t the picture perfect cake I was hoping for. However, looking back at the title of Mary’s blog….Giving Up On Perfect I am okay with it being less than picture perfect on this one. A little secret between you and I, it took less than 24 hours for the cake to disappear.
This is a very moist cake and even though you would be extremely tempted to frost it for a nicer presentation. Just hold off and let the cake speak for its self, because you will not be disappointed. If you absolutely must put something on top try a heavy sprinkling of powdered sugar or slice some berries and top with whip topping.
