Seed starting is a great way to get a jump-start on planting your garden. Yes, it probably is easier to go to the local farmers market, retail store or hardware store to purchase plants that are already mature and ready to plant. However, it doesn’t take much time out of your day to start seed indoors in preparation for planting season.
Paper Egg Cartons and/or Egg Shells
Place newspapers down on your work surface to protect it and to make the clean up much easier. Make sure your egg cartons and or egg shells are clean and free of any egg yolk or egg white.
Step 1: Fill your cartons and eggs shells with potting soil
Step 2: Insert proper number of seeds into each section of the egg carton and egg-shell.
Step 3: Water seeds (The carton will become wet, but don’t worry it is fine) and place in a warm area with lots of natural light. If you keep the cartons on the newspaper it will make moving them in and out of doors easier.
If you live in a warm climate you can leave them outside, however if your weather has not gotten to a point that you are out of the frost and freeze danger bring cartons in at night. You should be safe to take them back out for sun by 10am the following morning if your temperatures will allow.
Step 4: Write on egg carton what you have plated. This way it doesn’t wash off when watering your seeds and will not get lost such as with keeping the seed packet.
Refer to your seed packets to find the germination period. After the germination period is complete you should begin to seed tiny sprouts emerging from the soil. Before too long you will have small plants that are ready for your garden.
Always refer to the planting zones in your state to ensure the best health and growth of your new little plants.
